How did you hear about the Jazz Composers Co-op?

What to do when you're accepted

  1. 1. Confirm with the JCC administrators that you can attend the date/time you have been given.

  2. 2. Prepare your music for reading. You are responsible for bringing your music to the band to perform – we will not print it for you.

  3. So what does this entail?

    1. a) Instrumental parts must be clearly formatted and legible

    2. b) Instrumental parts must all be printed on A4 single sided sheets and provided to the musicians on the reading night. If the parts have multiple pages, please consider printing them on A3 paper (2 x A4s side by side) and taping together multiple pages. This will make it immensely easier for us not to lose your music!

    3. c) Minimise the solos in your arrangement. Solos are key elements to a jazz Big Band piece, however minutes spent soloing are minutes that you don’t have to workshop the compositional elements of your work.

    4. d) Ensure that your score and parts match! Rehearsal cues/bar numbers should be consistent across score and parts.

  4. 3. Upload your instrumental parts to the Jazz Composers Co-op Google Drive – a link will be supplied to you. We send these out the players in advance so they can look at your music before the reading session.

  5. 4. Prepare yourself to conduct the band. As it’s your piece, you will be required to present it and conduct it. If this is completely outside your skillset, please communicate with the Artistic Director of JCC via email and we can organise to conduct it.

  6. 5. Finally, you don’t need to explain your piece to the band! Let the music do the talking and workshop it from there.

  7.

  8. 6. Allow time at the end of the workshop to record your piece. This won’t be a studio level recording, but will be recorded on a Zoom stereo audio-visual device and supplied to you in the days after your session.
